I’ve been in this industry for 25 years. I’ve visited manufacturing facilities, reviewed hundreds of supplier audits, and read more Certificates of Analysis than I care to count. And the thing that strikes me most — still, after all of this — is how little of what actually determines supplement quality is visible to the person buying the product.
The label tells you what’s supposed to be in the bottle. It doesn’t tell you where those ingredients came from, how they were handled when they arrived at the facility, whether anyone tested them before they went into production, or whether the finished product was verified to contain what the label claims. That information exists — it lives in a paper trail that most consumers never see and that most brands never volunteer.
What follows is a guided tour through that paper trail: from the moment a raw ingredient is sourced to the moment a finished product leaves the warehouse. Not as a marketing piece for any specific brand — as an honest explanation of how the system works, where it’s strong, and where the gaps are.
It Starts Before the Ingredient Arrives: Sourcing
The quality conversation begins long before anything enters a manufacturing facility. It begins with sourcing — the decision about where a raw material comes from.
The same compound can come from dramatically different sources. Magnesium glycinate sourced from a specification-grade European supplier and magnesium glycinate sourced through a commodity broker with minimum documentation are both ‘magnesium glycinate’ on a label. The molecular formula is the same. The purity, the heavy metal content, the microbial load, and the consistency batch to batch may not be.
Responsible sourcing means working with suppliers who have documented quality systems of their own — who can provide specifications for each lot, who have been audited, and who stand behind the identity and purity of what they’re selling. It means preferring suppliers whose raw materials are produced in facilities with known manufacturing standards over those who can simply offer the lowest price per kilogram.
For most consumers, supplier qualification is completely invisible. But for a manufacturer doing things properly, it represents months of due diligence before a new ingredient ever enters inventory.
The Ingredient Arrives: Quarantine and Identity Testing
When a raw material arrives at a cGMP-compliant manufacturing facility, it does not go directly into production. It goes into quarantine.
This is non-negotiable in a properly run facility. Every incoming material — regardless of supplier history or relationship — is held in quarantine until identity testing confirms that what was received matches what was ordered. The quarantine status is documented. The testing is logged. The material does not leave quarantine for any reason until it passes.
Identity testing methods vary depending on the ingredient. FTIR spectroscopy — Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy — creates a molecular ‘fingerprint’ of the material and compares it to a reference standard. HPLC — high-performance liquid chromatography — is used to separate and quantify specific compounds, verifying both identity and concentration. For herbal ingredients, additional techniques like DNA barcoding or microscopic identification may be applied.

This step matters more than most people realize. Adulteration of raw materials — intentional or inadvertent — is a documented problem in the supplement supply chain. Some of the most high-profile supplement recalls in recent years have involved finished products that contained the wrong ingredient or the wrong dose because incoming materials were not adequately tested at receipt. Quarantine and identity testing are the primary defense against this failure mode.
The Facility: What cGMP Actually Means
The term ‘GMP’ — Good Manufacturing Practice — appears on a significant number of supplement labels. ‘cGMP’ means current Good Manufacturing Practice — the most recent regulatory standard, as enforced by the FDA under 21 CFR Part 111, which governs dietary supplement manufacturing in the United States.
GMP is not a voluntary quality seal. It is a federal regulatory requirement for supplement manufacturers. The ‘c’ in cGMP matters because the standards are periodically updated — manufacturers must stay current with evolving FDA expectations, not just comply with older versions of the regulations.
Dietary supplement manufacturers must register their facilities with the FDA.
This is not the same as FDA approval of specific products — the FDA does not pre-approve supplements before they go to market — but it establishes the facility as a regulated entity subject to inspection.
Registered facilities are subject to FDA inspection on a periodic basis.
Inspections assess compliance with cGMP regulations: documentation, equipment calibration, personnel training, in-process controls, finished product testing, and complaint handling. Warning letters and consent decrees resulting from inspection failures are a matter of public record.
Every significant process in a cGMP facility must be governed by a written Standard Operating Procedure.
How equipment is cleaned. How raw materials are handled. How batch records are documented. How deviations are investigated. SOPs create a consistent, auditable process — and the audit trail is what makes cGMP meaningful.
It’s important to understand what cGMP does and doesn’t guarantee. It guarantees that a manufacturing process is documented, controlled, and auditable. It guarantees that the facility is operating under an inspection regime. It does not guarantee that a specific product is safe or effective — that judgment still requires evaluating the ingredients, the doses, and the finished product testing.
cGMP is the floor. It’s the regulatory minimum. Most serious manufacturers want to exceed it — not just comply with it.
Into Production: Where Consistency Is Made or Lost
Once materials clear quarantine and a batch is authorized for production, the manufacturing process itself is governed by in-process controls — documented checks performed during production, not just at the end.
Blend uniformity is one of the most important of these. In a solid-dosage product — capsules, tablets, powders — ensuring that the active ingredient is evenly distributed throughout the batch determines whether every scoop or capsule contains the dose stated on the label. A blend that is not homogeneous can produce products where one capsule is underdosed and another is significantly overdosed, even within the same bottle. Testing for blend uniformity during production — not just assuming uniformity was achieved — is how responsible manufacturers catch this before the batch is finished.
Weight checks are performed continuously during encapsulation or tableting. Individual unit weights are sampled and measured against specification — flagging equipment drift before it compounds into a batch-level deviation. Disintegration testing verifies that tablets and capsules dissolve within specified timeframes, ensuring they’ll actually release their contents in the digestive system.
Every production step is documented in a batch record — a chronological log of who did what, when, with which equipment, and what the results were. The batch record is the legal and quality documentation of that specific lot’s production. It’s what an FDA investigator reviews during an inspection of a specific product, and it’s what a manufacturer refers to if a quality issue is identified after the product has shipped.
The Certificate of Analysis: What It Is and What It Means
At the conclusion of manufacturing, a finished product lot is tested — and the results of that testing are documented in a Certificate of Analysis, or CoA.
A CoA is a formal quality document. It identifies the product, the lot number, the testing date, the laboratory that performed the testing, the parameters tested, the specifications against which results were compared, and the actual results. It ends with a release determination: pass or fail.
What does a typical CoA test for? The answer varies by product and manufacturer, but a thorough CoA for a dietary supplement might include: identity confirmation (the finished product contains what it claims to contain), potency (the active ingredient is present at the claimed dose), heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury — all regulated to specific limits), microbials (total plate count, yeast and mold, absence of pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli), and physical characteristics like appearance, moisture, and dissolution.

One distinction that matters: a manufacturer-issued CoA is generated by the company that made the product, using their own internal laboratory or a contract laboratory they’ve engaged. A third-party CoA is generated by an independent laboratory with no commercial relationship to the manufacturer. Both are legitimate, but they carry different implications for the independence of the verification.
Published CoAs — where a company makes lot-specific testing documentation available — are a genuine transparency signal. Not every brand does this. It requires a degree of confidence in your own testing results that most companies, frankly, are unwilling to demonstrate publicly.
Third-Party Testing and Certification: Where It Adds Real Value
Beyond finished product CoAs, a category of third-party certification programs has developed to provide independent verification of supplement quality. These programs — NSF International, USP Verified, Informed Sport — are widely cited on labels and in marketing. It’s worth understanding what they actually certify and where they genuinely add value.
The most meaningful certification for any athlete subject to drug testing.
NSF screens products for a list of substances prohibited by major sports organizations — a test that standard manufacturing QC does not include. Products bearing this mark have been tested for banned substances in the specific lots that will reach consumers. For competitive athletes, this is not optional.
USP tests finished products against their own voluntary monograph standards for identity, potency, and purity.
The program audits manufacturing facilities and tests market samples. It does not evaluate efficacy, and it operates on a category-by-category basis — USP Verified means the product met USP’s specifications for that product type.
Similar in scope to NSF Certified for Sport — focused on banned substance screening for the athletic and military markets.
Uses the LGC laboratory in the UK. Provides lot-level batch certification, meaning every lot is screened before release.
Where third-party certification genuinely matters most: any context where banned substance screening is relevant (sport, military, law enforcement), and high-risk ingredient categories where identity fraud or contamination is documented (herbal extracts, proprietary blends, weight management products).
Where it provides less unique value: straightforward single-ingredient products from well-established, FDA-registered manufacturers with transparent testing practices. A single-ingredient product from a cGMP-compliant facility with published lot-specific CoAs is not a fundamentally different quality proposition from a certified equivalent — the core testing is similar; the certification adds the independent audit layer and the banned substance screen.
Third-party certification programs are also not free. The cost of certification is meaningful — particularly for smaller manufacturers — and those costs are passed through to consumers. A brand that carries NSF certification on every SKU is making a significant financial and operational commitment. That’s worth acknowledging. But the absence of third-party certification doesn’t automatically indicate a quality problem, particularly when a manufacturer is transparent about their cGMP status, facility registrations, and CoA availability.
What to Actually Ask a Brand
After 25 years in this industry, here are the questions I think are worth asking when you’re evaluating a supplement brand — regardless of how impressive the packaging is or how many certifications appear on the label.
This is the baseline.
If a brand cannot confirm this, or is evasive about it, that’s meaningful. Legitimate manufacturers are registered — it’s a federal requirement, not a voluntary credential.
Published CoAs mean a brand is willing to show you the actual test results for the specific lot you purchased.
This is a higher transparency standard than simply saying ‘our products are tested.’
Proprietary blends that list ingredients without individual doses tell you what’s in the formula but not how much.
If a label can’t tell you the dose of each active ingredient, you can’t evaluate whether those ingredients are dosed at levels that the research supports.
A formula developed by a practitioner with direct clinical experience is a different thing than one assembled by a marketing team optimizing for label appeal.
Ask about the expertise behind the formula, and whether the dosing reflects the clinical literature.
None of these questions are unreasonable. Any brand operating with genuine transparency should be able to answer all of them — and should be comfortable doing so. The ones that can’t, or won’t, are telling you something important.
The supplement industry is not uniformly regulated to the level that pharmaceutical manufacturing is — that’s simply the regulatory reality. But the tools for making informed decisions as a consumer exist. You just have to know what to ask for.

I’ve spent 25 years building supplier relationships, reviewing audits, and visiting facilities. Most people who buy supplements never think about any of this — and I understand that. You shouldn’t have to be a quality auditor to make good decisions about your health. But understanding the system, even at a high level, changes how you read a label. It changes what you look for. And it changes the questions you ask.
That shift is the goal of this article. Not cynicism about the industry — but the kind of informed skepticism that makes you a better consumer of it.
