Everyone asks me about the morning stack. Almost nobody asks about what I take at night.
That’s backwards. The morning is about priming — setting up energy systems, methylation pathways, and gut readiness for the day ahead. The evening is where the actual repair happens. While you sleep, your body runs its most important maintenance cycles: muscle protein synthesis peaks, growth hormone is released, the glymphatic system clears metabolic waste from the brain, and the nervous system shifts from sympathetic overdrive into parasympathetic recovery.
Most people let that window go completely unaddressed. They take their morning supplements, eat reasonably well, train hard — and then do nothing to support the physiology that determines whether any of it actually sticks.
The Evening Method is three products. Sequenced. Taken in the 30–60 minutes before bed. Here’s what they are, why they’re in the stack, and why the order matters.
Step One: Magnesium Glycinate — The Foundation of Everything
I take Magnesium Glycinate first — typically 30–45 minutes before I plan to sleep. Two capsules, 400mg elemental magnesium, with a small glass of water.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. Its role in sleep specifically is direct and well-documented: it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, suppresses the release of cortisol, and binds to GABA receptors — the same receptors targeted by pharmaceutical sleep medications. It also regulates melatonin production. Without adequate magnesium, the nervous system simply cannot downregulate the way it needs to for deep sleep.
The glycinate form is critical. Magnesium glycinate is bound to glycine, an amino acid with its own calming neurological properties. It has among the highest bioavailability of any magnesium form, and it’s extremely gentle on the GI tract. This is not the same as magnesium oxide — the cheap, essentially inert form you’ll find in most low-quality supplements with about 4% bioavailability. Glycinate absorbs. Oxide passes through.

Step Two: Best-Rest Formula — Multi-Pathway Sleep Architecture
About 15–20 minutes after the magnesium, I take Best-Rest Formula. This is the most targeted sleep-specific formula I’ve found — and I’ve looked at nearly everything on the market.

It contains melatonin at a clinically appropriate dose — low enough to support natural circadian signaling rather than overwhelming it, which is the mistake most people make when they take 5–10mg melatonin products. Valerian root and passionflower round out the formula with gentle anxiolytic support that reduces sleep latency without inducing grogginess the next morning.
The reason I take this after the magnesium rather than simultaneously is sequence logic: magnesium begins the parasympathetic shift, and Best-Rest Formula’s compounds — particularly the theanine and melatonin — work most effectively when the nervous system is already moving in that direction. You’re not fighting cortisol when you take it. You’re amplifying a process that’s already started.
Circadian signal.
Low-dose melatonin supports natural sleep onset without disrupting the body’s own production cycle. Higher doses (5–10mg) common in retail products are typically unnecessary and can cause next-morning grogginess.
Alpha wave promoter.
An amino acid found naturally in green tea. Promotes relaxed alertness and reduces the mental activation that makes falling asleep difficult after a full day. Works synergistically with melatonin.
GABAergic support.
Both valerian root and passionflower have well-documented anxiolytic effects that reduce sleep latency. Passionflower in particular has shown efficacy in clinical trials for improving subjective sleep quality without dependence risk.
Step Three: Daily Electrolytes — The One People Never Think About
This is the part of the evening stack that surprises people most. An electrolyte packet before bed? Here’s why.
You lose electrolytes while you sleep. Respiration, mild perspiration, and the physiological processes of cellular repair all draw on your electrolyte reserves overnight. If you trained that day, you’ve already depleted those reserves significantly. Going to bed electrolyte-deficient means your muscles can’t fully relax, your nervous system can’t complete its recovery cycle efficiently, and you’re more likely to wake with that low-grade fatigue that people attribute to ‘not sleeping well’ but is actually incomplete restoration.
I use Thorne’s Daily Electrolytes — one stick pack dissolved in 8–10 oz of water, taken with the Best-Rest Formula or just after. The formula delivers a complete electrolyte panel: sodium (from Himalayan pink salt), potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. Zero sugar. No artificial color. The magnesium content complements the glycinate I took earlier — not duplicating it, but extending electrolyte coverage into the overnight window.

The complete evening sequence: Magnesium Glycinate 30–45 minutes before bed. Best-Rest Formula 15–20 minutes later. Daily Electrolytes with the Best-Rest Formula or just after. That’s it.
The 30-minute window isn’t arbitrary. Magnesium glycinate’s onset is gradual — it needs time to begin its parasympathetic effect before the sleep-specific compounds are introduced. Taking everything simultaneously at once compresses this into a single acute intervention, which is less effective than layering the compounds in the sequence that mirrors their physiological action.
What I notice — and what clients consistently report — is qualitatively different sleep. Not sedated. Not artificially flat. Genuinely deeper, with less middle-of-the-night waking, and a sense of having actually recovered by morning rather than simply having had your eyes closed for seven hours.
That distinction matters more than almost anything else in a supplement protocol. Recovery isn’t optional if your goal is performance — in the gym, in the office, or in the rest of your life. The Evening Method is how you protect it.
